Hand Turkeys With Arts And Crafts Supplies

November for most school teachers, at least those of our younger children, is pretty much national hand turkey month. It is the sort of project almost any kid can excel at imbuing their hand made bird with a wealth of their own personality and whims. It is the sort of project that can brighten up the classroom and brighten up a kid’s week in between important math, English, science and history lessons.

The fact that the hand turkey has barely changed in the last twenty, thirty, maybe even fifty years is a testament to how great the assignment is for children. I can remember my first hand turkey. After the wild revelation that my hand could almost look like a turkey I was thrilled at the  prospect of making the turkey whatever color I wanted. Using arts and crafts supplies, me and the class made the most of our imaginations allowing our inclinations towards unrealistic depictions of turkeys run wild. And it was encouraged!

Encouraging kids’ creativity is, of course, one of the most important aspects of early education. Educational school supplies can be a fantastic way to unlock that creativity all over a piece of construction paper. It’s liberating for children and hand turkeys are pretty easy to grade.
